Statement from Jess Davidson, Executive Director of End Rape on Campus:
“The Red Zone is the first 6-8 weeks of school when students are most likely to be sexually assaulted—50 percent of sexual assaults at schools happen between August and November. Additionally, students of color, people living with disabilities, LGBTQ folks, and immigrant students are disproportionately affected by sexual assault in schools. It is unacceptable for schools to continue to shirk their duties to provide an education free from violence and discrimination. It is unacceptable for the highest leaders in the federal government, who are charged with protecting the civil rights of students, to refuse to commit to enforcing best practices established by decades of previous administrations on both sides of the aisle,” shares Jess Davidson, End Rape on Campus Executive Director. “We plan to let these leaders know exactly how displeased we are with their refusal to show up for survivors. Together, survivors persevere. We resist. We are resilient. We reclaim this year’s Red Zone by taking space to reclaim the parts of our daily lives that trauma from sexual violence can interrupt, but we will not stop demanding better of those in power.”
